The 2026 NFL season is set to kick off with a unique Wednesday night opener, featuring the defending champion Seattle Seahawks hosting the first game of the season on September 9th. This marks the second time in NFL history the season has begun on a Wednesday, with the previous instance occurring in 2012.

In addition to the traditional opener, the NFL is expanding its international presence with a Week 1 game in Melbourne, Australia, between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams. This follows recent games held in Brazil, indicating a growing global focus for the league. The game in Melbourne is scheduled for September 11th.

The offseason has already been a period of significant movement, as reflected in the latest NFL Power Rankings released by FOX Sports. The Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings have seen their stock rise after free agency, while the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers have fallen. Key free agency moves include the Baltimore Ravens signing Trey Hendrickson and adding safety Jaylinn Hawkins, and the Cowboys acquiring Rashan Gary via trade. Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins have signaled a rebuild by trading star receiver Jaylen Waddle to the Broncos.

The 2026 NFL Draft is also generating considerable buzz, with early betting odds favoring Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza as the likely No. 1 overall pick. Arvell Reese is also a strong contender for the second pick, while the third spot remains more contested, with David Bailey of Texas Tech emerging as a notable prospect. College football analysts, such as FOX Sports’ Joel Klatt, are weighing in on these draft prospects, highlighting players like Bailey for his disruptive potential on defense.

Beyond the NFL, the United Football League (UFL) is also gearing up for its 2026 season, which will commence on March 27th. The league will feature new teams and coaches, with the Birmingham Stallions set to face the new Louisville Kings in the season opener. All 43 UFL games will be broadcast across various networks, including FOX, ABC, and ESPN. The UFL season kicked off with Week 1 action that saw victories for the Birmingham Stallions, Dallas Renegades, and St. Louis Battlehawks.

Discussions surrounding potential rule changes and league operations are ongoing. At the NFL’s annual meeting, topics such as the use of artificial intelligence, health and safety protocols, international growth, and the development of flag football are on the agenda. The league is also reviewing kickoff rules to address concussion rates, with data from the 2025 season indicating a change in impact. While the “tush push” play is not currently slated for discussion, it was a significant talking point in the previous year.
