Volleyball continues to capture national attention with exciting developments in both professional and collegiate circuits. The Pro Volleyball Federation (PVF) has significantly expanded its reach through a multi-year partnership with CBS Sports, promising more televised matches for fans across the country. This collaboration aims to capitalize on the growing interest in volleyball, which has become the most popular team sport for high school girls in the U.S.
In a landmark move, CBS Sports Network will broadcast up to 20 PVF matches in 2025, including the championship semifinals and final. Furthermore, a PVF championship match will be aired on the CBS Television Network, marking a historic first for professional volleyball on national over-the-air television. This expanded coverage is expected to build a larger fanbase and increase visibility for the sport, building on the momentum seen in NCAA women’s volleyball, which has become a cultural phenomenon.
The collegiate level also continues to deliver thrilling performances. The Texas Longhorns made history by sweeping their way to a second consecutive NCAA women’s volleyball championship in December 2023, defeating top-ranked Nebraska in front of a record-breaking crowd of 19,727 fans. This marked Texas’s fourth national title and third under head coach Jerritt Elliott. The Longhorns also set a new NCAA championship record with 12 service aces in their victory. Junior hitter Madisen Skinner was named the Most Outstanding Player for her stellar performance, marking her third national championship overall, having previously won one with Kentucky in 2020.
Meanwhile, the Loyola men’s volleyball team is making a strong return to the NCAA Tournament, securing its spot after a dominant performance in the MIVA tournament. This marks their first NCAA Tournament appearance in a decade, fueled by a strong second stint from head coach Shane Davis. The Ramblers are heading into the quarterfinals with confidence, having swept their way through the MIVA tournament.
The University of Pittsburgh’s women’s volleyball team has also been a consistent powerhouse, repeatedly reaching the NCAA Tournament’s Final Four. Despite roster turnover, the team has shown resilience and high talent levels, aiming for deep tournament runs.
As the sport grows, new talent continues to emerge, and professional leagues like the PVF are providing athletes with more opportunities. The league is expanding its reach, with new teams set to join in 2025, further solidifying its role in the professional volleyball landscape. This burgeoning professional scene, combined with the enduring excitement of collegiate volleyball, promises a bright future for the sport.
