The 2026 Major League Baseball season is gearing up with significant media rights agreements and exciting matchups on the horizon. As baseball broadcasting evolves, fans can expect a dynamic viewing experience across multiple platforms.
Netflix and NBC Join the Broadcast Booth
In a major shift for baseball coverage, Netflix and NBC have secured new media rights deals that will see them broadcasting a significant number of games starting in the 2026 season. Netflix will be the exclusive broadcaster for the season-opening game on March 25, featuring the San Francisco Giants against the New York Yankees. This historic matchup will be the first MLB game broadcast in the United States by Netflix. Additionally, Netflix will also air the T-Mobile Home Run Derby and special event games, including the 2026 MLB at Field of Dreams game between the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies. NBC, returning to regular game broadcasts after a quarter-century absence, will air Sunday Night Baseball, the Sunday Leadoff games, and the entire Wild Card Series.
ESPN’s Evolving Role and MLB.TV Integration
While ESPN’s role in broadcasting Sunday Night Baseball shifts, the network remains a key player in MLB coverage. ESPN has acquired the rights to MLB.TV, making thousands of out-of-market games available through the ESPN App starting in 2026. The network will also broadcast a national midweek game package and an exclusive package of 30 regular-season games. This new agreement between ESPN and MLB, running from 2026 through 2028, solidifies ESPN’s deep connection with the sport and extends a partnership that began in 1990.
Key Matchups and Player Highlights
The 2026 season promises compelling action, with the Los Angeles Dodgers aiming for a historic three-peat as World Series champions. The regular season kicks off on March 25 with the Giants-Yankees game, followed by a full slate of 11 games on Opening Day, March 26. Notable player achievements from the previous season include MVP awards for Aaron Judge of the Yankees and Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers, with Tarik Skubal (Tigers) and Paul Skenes (Pirates) taking home the Cy Young Awards. In recent news, Giants ace Logan Webb is set to start Opening Day against the Yankees, and Randy Arozarena has stated an incident with Cal Raleigh at the World Baseball Classic.
New Rules and International Play
The 2026 season will also introduce new rules, including the ability for players to challenge umpire calls on balls and strikes using the Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS). Internationally, the MLB Mexico City Series will feature the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks on April 25 and 26.
